10:30 am- The Sholem Khaveyrim Present: "Yiddish, Yinglish and Borscht." Former Catskills and Archie Barkan Miami Beach emcee and entertainer Archie Barkan brings a taste of the Borscht Belt to Sholem.  From 1957-1977, Mr. Barkan performed in various hotels in the Catskill Mountains in New York, Miami Beach, Fla., Lakewood, N.J., Atlantic City, N.J., and the Pocono Mountains.  His shtick is half in English/half Yiddish. He also plays piano, sings, tells stories, does vocal impersonations and encourages audience participation.  Mr. Barkan is also a Yiddish translator and a teacher of Yiddish at Santa Monica Emeritus College and at Elderhostels.

10:15 am- Sholem Community Forum:  "Oasis of Peace." Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam is literally the “Oasis of Peace." It's a village situated midway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, inhabited by jointly by Jews and Palestinian Arabs of Israeli citizenship. More than 50 families prove that peaceful coexistence is possible. Speaker is John Bracken, assistant director of the American Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam.

11:15 am-  Karen Knecht of the Congress of Secular Jewish Organizations (CSJO) will speak to Sholem's Hey and Vov classes about the Memorial Day weekend conference of the CSJO.

10:15 am- "The December Dilemma."  An opportunity for intercultural families to discuss how to celebrate the holidays together, while respecting the heritage of all family members. Discuss how children can learn to appreciate the richness of cultural diversity in their own families without feelings of confusion - a common concern. The winter holidays can be a difficult time for so-called "mixed" or "interfaith" families, but family members who can respect and honor the culture and tradition of others can enrich, not dilute, their own experience and humanity.

What if grassroots get-out- the-vote efforts succeed beyond our wildest dreams, but our votes don’t get counted? What if tens of thousands of new voters go to the polls in November, but they can’t use the new voting machines? Are our LA County tax dollars being used to buy voting machines that allow election fraud? Speakers will include:  LA County Registrar-Recorder Connie McCormack, Kathay Feng, Voting Rights Program Director of The Asian Pacific American Legal Center, and Kim Alexander, President, California Voters Foundation.
