Sholem Committees
Sholem is a community-run organization.
We function only as well as our committees. All committees are always in search of fresh ideas and energy. Volunteers are needed at all levels from idea generation through execution. Get involved!
ADULT ACTIVITIES
Plans activities for Sholem adults and residents of the greater Los Angeles area. These include lectures, forums on political and social issues, and social gatherings.
BAR/BAS MITSVE
Assists families going through the Sholem bar/basmitsve program. The members of this committee are parents of Sholem children who became bar- or basmitsve in a previous year.
B’SHERTE (“FATED”)
Plans activities that recognize and celebrate inter-cultural families. Its two main annual events are the “December Dilemma” discussion and Shavuos holiday observance.
FINANCE
Working closely with the financial secretary, develops financial policies and an annual budget. Periodically reports to the community about Sholem's financial condition.
FUNDRAISING
Seeks sources of supplemental funding by applying for grants, producing theatrical productions and cultural events, organizing theater parties, and selling merchandise.
HOLIDAY
Organizes and publicizes Sholem's secular celebrations of the Jewish holidays.
HOLIDAY OBSERVANCES
Conducts periodic reviews of Sholem's secular celebrations of the Jewish holidays. Revises holiday rituals as needed to keep them fresh and timely.
KHAVEYRIM (“FRIENDS”)
Explores issues and plans activities of special interest to senior members of our community.
KHEVRE ( “FELLOWSHIP”)
Coordinates community response for members experiencing a crisis, such as death, serious illness or job loss. Maintains a list of Sholem members available for support when needed.
MEMBERSHIP
Registers members, collects tuition and fees and maintains the mailing list. Prepares materials such as class rosters, mailing labels and the membership directory. Enhances Sholem’s membership database software.
NEWSLETTER
Edits, publishes, and distributes Sholem's monthly newsletter. Solicits and, as needed, writes occasional news articles.
OUTREACH
Arranges for publicity through advertising, press releases and participation in outside events and organizations. Maintains an advertising contact list. Promotes Sholem's presence in the wider community to reach potential new members.
SCHOOL
Assists the Program Coordinator with teacher recruitment, hiring, and evaluation. Works with the Educational Director on curriculum development and implementation. Handles miscellaneous school tasks as needed.
SOCIAL ACTION
Organizes programs to educate students and adult members about current social issues. Develops action plans for participation in movements for social change in line with Sholem’s progressive values.
