Affiliations |
Our Community is run and governed by its members,
meeting monthly in general gatherings; decisions are reached by
consensus. Committees are composed of member-volunteers. Committee
chairs form an executive committee. |
| The Sholem Community Organization is affiliated
with similar groups on a local, national and international basis,
while maintaining full independence. |

Sholem is a community-run organization.
We function only as well as our committees. All committees
are always in search of fresh ideas and energy. Get involved! |
| Sholem publishes a monthly newsletter, and welcomes
contributions. To obtain information about or to contribute to the
monthly Sholem newsletter, contact the editor. |
| Adult Activities/Social Action |
| Organizes adult and school activities to influence
the wider community and educate ourselves about issues in a manner
consistent with Sholem’s progressive, ethical values. Plans
activities for Sholem adults and members of the larger community.
These include lectures, forums on political and social issues, and
social gatherings. |
| Communications/Membership |
| Arranges for publicity through advertising, press
releases, and the Sholem web site. Maintains the e-mail list. Promotes
Sholem's presence in the wider community to reach potential new
members. Prepares and maintains registration, tuition and dues materials
as well as the roster. |
| Finance |
| Develops financial policies and an annual budget
and, working closely with the treasurer, provides feedback to the
community about Sholem's financial condition. |
| Fundraising |
| Seeks sources of supplemental funding, by applying
for grants, producing theatrical productions and cultural events,
organizing theater parties, and selling merchandise. |
| Holiday |
| Organizes and publicizes Sholem's secular celebrations
of Jewish holidays. |
| Holiday Observances |
| Studies, writes, and re-writes Sholem's secular
celebrations of Jewish holidays. |
| Khaveyrim |
| Khaveyrim explore issues and plan activities of
special interest to senior members of our community. |
| Khevre |
| Assists community members experiencing a time
of need or crisis, including a death, serious illness, job loss,
or other hardship. |
| Newsletter |
| Edits, publishes, and mails Sholem's monthly newsletter. |
| Phone Tree |
| Relays information by phone to community members. |
| School |
| Coordinates teacher recruitment, hiring, and evaluation;
assists the school principal with administrative tasks; and helps
the Educational Director with curriculum development. |
| Affiliations |
| Sholem is affiliated with the Southern California
Jewish Secular Conference, the Congress of Secular Jewish
Organizations,
and the International Federation of Secular Humanistic
Jews. Sholem
also participates in the Leadership Training programs of the International
Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism. Through our affiliations,
the Sholem Community is united with similar communities in the U.S.,
Canada, Latin America, Israel, Europe, and Australia. In Los
Angeles, we work closely with friends at the Workmen's
Circle-Arbeter Ring and at the Progressive
Jewish Alliance. |
